ISSUE #15 JANUARY 2009

Kirby's Korner

Happy New Year!

2008 sure was an amazing year for me, so I decided to write down my top 5 highlights!

  1. Meeting hundreds of new four-legged friends at Dioji.
  2. Swimming dozens of laps each week in the pool.
  3. Making friends with new Dog Associates who play & cuddle with me.
  4. Luxurious baths that left me smelling fresh & clean.
  5. Overnight slumber parties while my folks were out of town.

Just a reminder to everyone to bring in their Holiday Email this month so they can come in for a full day of play for the half day price! If you didn’t receive yours, just let us know and I’ll personally make sure you get it.

Pet Bereavement in Santa Barbara

By Dr. Trish Lane

The loss of an animal companion can be one of the most profound losses we humans experience. It’s also not uncommon that our first loss in our life will be that of our first beloved pet. How we are taught to deal with that loss will set the tone for how we deal with loss during our life time. The human-animal bond refers to that strong positive interaction that exists between humans and animals – the special bond that enhances human quality of life. The loss of the human-animal bond often results in grief. Grief can be described as emotions and behavior that ensue when a love relationship has ended. The closeness of the love relationship will be predictive of the intensity of the loss. In the context of the human-animal bond, individuals value the relationship regardless of species. In addition, grief may be compounded by the lack of support or understanding about the significance of the loss.

It’s not unusual for individuals to share that losing their pet was more painful than losing a close family member. Despite their experience of loss; many are ridiculed, teased, or have their feelings dismissed and so choose to hide their intense pain. One man shares, “Don’t tell me he was “just a dog,” he was by best friend, my family, and my confidant.” Don’t ask me “if I’ve “gotten over it yet”; I’ll never get over him.” A woman describes her boss’s thoughtlessness, “It’s just a cat - you can get another one at the pound.” Her response, “If my husband died or my home burned down, I could get another one of them as well – it’s about the relationship and I loved my cat more than I believe I’ve ever loved anyone or anything.” Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for these attitudes to come from family members, friends, colleagues, and employers. Even therapists have been reported to have made such hurtful remarks. As people are educated about the human-animal bond the goal is that they will come to have a greater appreciation for the relationship.

Having the choice of euthanasia presents a difficult dilemma for individuals. There is no real comparison with the loss of loved humans, because we do not euthanize human beings. Nothing seems to complicate the grief process like the guilt that may accompany the responsibility of ending the life of a dear friend that you have loved and nurtured. Having noted this, it seems that guilt is the biggest hurdle for people to handle. Although euthanasia literally means “good death”; nothing good comes with the responsibility of this decision. Many individuals who elect to euthanize are often stuck in the “what if’s” and need considerable guidance to make peace with their decision. Ironically, for most animals, euthanasia is our last final gift to free them from a body that has failed them. Group support can be a powerful healer as members may forgive themselves as they forgive one another. Sometimes, it is through this sharing that people come to trust their decision. Alternately, it helps to simply ask them if their pet would want them to be experiencing so much psychological pain. Inevitably, the answer is “no.”

Santa Paws Dogfest in early December was a huge success. The event raised nearly $16,000 for the non-profit Shiva’s Center and much of the funds will go to the Tea Fire animal victims and their medical bills. Dioji was proud to be a part of this first annual event!

Barkimonial

Hello, my name is Dasher Bostock. I am a very energetic German Shorthaired Pointer. My master Steve has been bringing me to Dioji weekly since August 2007. It's a great place! I swim in the bone shaped pool, fetch balls and have the greatest time just pallin' around with the other dogs. Fun, fun, fun! Also, it just so happens that I was the first overnighter at Dioji. What a great night that was. We played and lounged around...it was as good as being at home! Now I stay the night when my master goes out of town and it's always great! Here's one more for you...I was even picked up by the Dioji-mobile once when I escaped the back yard! Dad picked me up safely after work...good thing I had my Dioji tag on! How's that for luvin'? As you can tell I can keep going on for days about the care I get at Dioji, but right now I want to personally thank all my truly awesome friends at Dioji for taking such good care of me. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love you guys.

Your good buddy,
Dasher Bostock

P.S. You can see me on the opening of the Dioji commercial playing ball!

Pets of your own
I don't have a dog of my own (yet!) but I grew up with an adorable Samoyed named Princess and have been in love with dogs ever since. However, I do share my apartment with a chinchilla named Razzle and a bearded dragon named Buddy.

Experience
In order to get my four-legged fix, I began volunteering at DAWG providing much needed love, attention, and exercise to eager, lovable friends before starting at Dioji - it's great to start the morning with smiling faces, curious noses, and wagging tails.

Something people may not know about you
A hard combination to guess, I'm half Indian and half Italian - which basically means that every time I go home to visit the family, I am in food heaven.

Favorite activity with the dogs
My favorite "activity" with the dogs is just to find some quiet, individual time with each dog and get to know what they're really about. Even the most energetic and rowdy players are affectionate sweethearts inside.
