Kirby's Corner

As VP of quality control I love taking in all of feedback and suggestion on how to improve Dioji. You barked and I listened! I am thrilled to let you know that daycare dogs will have even longer to romp and play on Saturdays and boarding dog's owners will have the convenience of even more time to drop off and pickup because we are extending our hours. Beginning July 2nd we will be open on Saturdays from 9:00am until 5:00pm!
(The remainder of June our current hours remain the same – 10am-4pm)
Progress continues to be made on our new location opening in Santa Barbara. From what I understand the pool digging will commence soon! (For all my four legged pals who want to help with the digging, I'm afraid we're going to need to go with some hefty machinery instead.) I will continue to keep you posted as our opening nears!

Summer Safety
The sun is shining and what better way to enjoy a beautiful day than out and about with our beloved dogs!
|
Please keep in mind that the summer months while enjoyable can bring on uncomfortable situations for our pals. Fleas, ticks, foxtails and dehydration are a few things we all need to keep in mind and look out for during the coming months.
What are Foxtails?
Foxtails are a plant that dry up this time of year which is when they can cause problems for our dogs. Foxtail seeds can actually enter into a dog's body (through the skin, nose, ears, paws and eyes) and cause infection. The seeds act like a fish hook so they can only move forward, not backward which makes them very difficult to remove. After spending time in an area with foxtails, spend a good amount of time brushing out your dog and checking them over thoroughly (especially on their paws between their toes).
How do you know if your dog has a foxtail? Signs are excessive sneezing (foxtail in nose), lump on skin that is painful to touch (paw or undercoat), violent shaking of head (foxtail in ear) or pawing at eye. Wherever the foxtail is located, once it's in the dog it should be examined by a vet in order to make sure the entire object is removed. |
A Bit on Fleas & Ticks
After outdoor activities like hikes and romps through tall brush you should always check your dog over thoroughly for ticks. The best way is to simply run your fingers through the fur with enough pressure to feel any abnormalities in the skin. If you do feel a small lump, pull the fur apart to see if it is a tick (may look like a small black or brown pimple and legs may be visible). Ticks enter the body clockwise so they should be removed counterclockwise with tweezers and special care should be taken to make sure the head of the tick is removed completely. Should any part of the tick remain in the skin, the dog should visit the vet so the area does not get infected. Luckily flea control is as easy as a monthly topical like Advantage to keep our dogs comfortable and flea free!
Dehydration
While you're preparing for your hike, beach romp or wherever you may be going and you are filling up your water bottle to keep yourself hydrated don't forget to do the same for your pet. Luckily there are a lot of great travel bowls/bottles to make brining water for you pal as easy as it is for yourself.
The weather is beautiful and it's fun to enjoy the outdoors with our dogs so don't let these things stop you, just be aware that they are out there and plan accordingly! |

The Dioji Family
Each month we like to introduce one of our valuable team members to you so you can get to know the Dioji staff even better.

Dog Associate
Hometown
Jamul - inland of San Diego, we had 5 acres with ducks, geese, chickens, dogs, cats and a goat! Grass Valley - foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, 100 degrees in the summer, snow in the winter, yikes! I moved to SB for school about ten years ago and Goleta has been my home ever since.
Pets of My Own
Bodie is a rescue I saw on Petfinder. He's a drop-out of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation training program. They adopt dogs from shelters and train them to do search and rescue work. Bodie just didn't have the drive, he'd quit after a little while of working. He is the same when we play fetch, a few throws and he goes and lays in the shade!
Something people may not know about you
I basically lived out of my car (a Renault 5) when I traveled around France for 6 months when I was 21.
Favorite activity with the dogs
I really just like being in the yard with the dogs, seeing their different play styles, watching them make new friends. I've been around dogs my whole life and I still find myself laughing out loud with delight several times a day when some dog has done something super cute or funny.
Favorite Dioji moment
Buster, one of the more shy dogs, came up to me and sat on my feet. He didn't look up or wag, but he stayed there for several minutes, I felt so special!

How often do you spend time at Dioji?
Don't be too jealous, but I get to spend some time at Dioji every single day! My dad knows how much I enjoy the love and attention from the Dioji team that he makes sure I get it every day. Friday is always bath day for me too which I love! The spa bath is so relaxing and leaves me smelling so great I head straight home for a cuddle fest with my dad.
Do you have any best friends at Dioji?
I get along with everyone but if my pals Lucky, Joe, Snoopy and Peanut are here I spend the whole time with them.
What is your favorite thing to do in the play yard?
I really love to sunbath when I'm not playing. I find a table or play structure to lounge on and enjoy the sunshine. When I'm ready for attention from the staff, I hop down and say hi by tapping at their leg. |
