Cage-free Overnight Boarding Remodel

Just in time for summer boarding stays, we have remodeled our cage-free overnight boarding suite! My nightly slumber is even more restful now that the area for me and my pals is larger and more spacious. The bedding and pillows have been updated along with some new paint, wall hangings and pictures! Don't tell my folks, but this place is even nicer than my 'real' home.

There is nothing like a good night sleep with my four legged friends and Dioji staff after a fun day of play. If you haven't seen the updated overnight boarding suite yet, be sure to ask on your next visit! Sweet Dreams!

What is the Santa Barbara itch?

By Jean Greek, DVM, DACVD

Living in paradise means that we enjoy plants blooming and temperate weather all year. The down side of paradise is allergies. Unlike human allergy sufferers, whose signs usually consist of sinus headaches and runny noses, cats and dogs are more likely to have skin and ear problems from their allergies. The same pollens, molds and dust that send us reaching for the Kleenex, cause dogs to chew their feet, get chronic ear and skin infections and rub their faces. The "Santa Barbara Itch", more properly termed atopy or atopic dermatitis, refers to the large number of allergies that we see in this area as a result of the mild weather. Unlike less temperate areas, where some relief may be seen as the seasons change, many of our local patients have allergy signs year round. To compound the problem, fleas also enjoy our weather.

Fortunately, the newest flea control products are extremely safe and effective. There are also a variety of treatments to help control environmental allergies. For many years, veterinarians had to rely on cortisone or steroid drugs as their mainstay treatment for allergic symptoms. Although these drugs often provide short term relief, chronic use can lead to serious side effects, ranging from liver problems, to cataracts to increased risk of infection. There are many other options ranging from antihistamines, to topical therapies including frequent bathing to hyposensitization to the offending allergens. Ask your veterinarian about your pet's options.

Dr. Greek is the only board certified veterinary dermatologist on the central coast.

The Dioji Family

Each month we like to introduce one of our valuable team members to you so you can get to know the Dioji staff even better.

Tawny

Dog Associate

Hometown
Originally from Long beach, CA but I grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Pets of My Own
I have a beautiful, rescued, pit mix named Holly. She's about 3 years old, I've had her for 2 years now. I have fostered many animals before her but there was something about her, I couldn't say no. Her favorite hobbies are sun bathing and snoring. I am absolutely lucky to have her in my life.

Something people may not know about you
I'm a twin. My twins name is Sean and he's one minute older than me. I love being a twin, we went to a high school with 16 sets of twins, 8 of them were in our senior class. We are complete opposites. He has a master's degree in computer science and I've worked with animals most my life. But he's one of my best friends and yes, we still celebrate our birthday together.

Favorite activity with the dogs
My favorite time of day is late afternoon when I get good one-on-one time with the dogs and really get to know their personalities, especially the shy ones.

Favorite Dioji moment
I worked at the county shelter for a couple years so when I see dogs at Dioji that I used to take care of it really makes me so happy knowing they were placed in loving homes. Sometimes they recognize me before I recognize them. Shotzee (previously AKA Yancy) followed me around for 2 days before I truly knew it was her. She came to the shelter when she was about 4 months old and was there for about 3 years so needless to say I was ecstatic to see her at Dioji.

How often do you spend time at Dioji?
I have so much energy and enjoy coming to Dioji so much I'm here whenever given the opportunity!

Do you have any best friends at Dioji?
Bobby, Apollo, Bela, Rupert, Homer, Charlie, Sami, to name a few but as you'll see below, I love everyone!

What is your favorite thing to do in the play yard?
I love the challenge of getting EVERY dog to play with me. Young, old, big, small, black, white, spotted, it doesn't matter – I will try my hardest to get you to play with me! I especially love to seek out dogs that are on their first visit and show them the ropes.
