Chocolate Toxicity

As Halloween approaches, you will likely encounter more candy and chocolates finding their way into your home. Tasty as it is, be a smart pet owner and do not share it with Spot, intentionally or unintentionally.

A dog’s physiology is unable to handle the concentration of methylxanthines (caffeine and theobromine) present in many chocolates.

Aside from an initially great taste, Spot may well experience diarrhea, vomiting and increased thirst within a few hours, and in severe cases chocolate can induce heart arrhythmia, seizures, coma, and occasionally death. If you know or suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, call the vet immediately for advice. The sooner s/he receives care, the better the chances for a full recovery.

Something people may not know about you: I was once the poster child for Girls Inc. of Santa Barbara in 1999.

Favorite activity with the dogs: Encouraging and praising dogs when they use the play equipment or are obedient.

Favorite Dioji moment: Fitting 5 medium-large and 2 small dogs in the bed with me. I slept in the most awkward position ever in my life but it was worth having all the dogs sleeping soundly and comfortable.
