ASK THE EXPERT

Summer Safety

The sun is shining and what better way to enjoy a beautiful day than out and about with our beloved dogs! Please keep in mind that the summer months while enjoyable can bring on uncomfortable situations for our pals. Fleas, ticks, foxtails and dehydration are a few things we all need to keep in mind and look out for during the coming months.

What are Foxtails?

Foxtails are a plant that dry up this time of year which is when they can cause problems for our dogs. Foxtail seeds can actually enter into a dog’s body (through the skin, nose, ears, paws and eyes) and cause infection. The seeds act like a fish hook so they can only move forward, not backward which makes them very difficult to remove. After spending time in an area with foxtails, spend a good amount of time brushing out your dog and checking them over thoroughly (especially on their paws between their toes).

How do you know if your dog has a foxtail? Signs are excessive sneezing (foxtail in nose), lump on skin that is painful to touch (paw or undercoat), violent shaking of head (foxtail in ear) or pawing at eye. Wherever the foxtail is located, once it’s in the dog it should be examined by a vet in order to make sure the entire object is removed.

A Bit on Fleas & Ticks

After outdoor activities like hikes and romps through tall brush you should always check your dog over thoroughly for ticks. The best way is to simply run your fingers through the fur with enough pressure to feel any abnormalities in the skin. If you do feel a small lump, pull the fur apart to see if it is a tick (may look like a small black or brown pimple and legs may be visible). Ticks enter the body clockwise so they should be removed counterclockwise with tweezers and special care should be taken to make sure the head of the tick is removed completely. Should any part of the tick remain in the skin, the dog should visit the vet so the area does not get infected.

Luckily flea control is as easy as a monthly topical like Advantage to keep our dogs comfortable and flea free! To help make it easier on the pocketbook, be sure not to miss our 20% off coupon this month.

Dehydration

While you’re preparing for your hike, beach romp or wherever you may be going and you are filling up your water bottle to keep yourself hydrated don’t forget to do the same for your pet. Luckily there are a lot of great travel bowls/bottles to make brining water for you pal as easy as it is for yourself. Check out the featured products for the various options available.

The weather is beautiful and it’s fun to enjoy the outdoors with our dogs so don’t let these things stop you, just be aware that they are out there and plan accordingly!

Product of the month

Water for your pet on the go!

While you’re out enjoying the summer weather with your pal, don’t forget that they get thirsty too! To make it a bit easier while on the go, we have 3 options for ensuring you always have drinking water for them.

Handi Drink portable water bottle

This combination water bottle and drinking bowl works great on the go. Simply squeeze water into attached bowl for drinking, then fold for storage

Outward Hound Adventure Travel Bowl

This rugged food-and-water bowl is perfect for outdoor adventures - folds flat and clips to your backpack or belt loop between uses.

Road Refresher No Spill Water Bowl

This is a must for your car! This unique design allows just enough water through for your dog to drink at all times, yet immediately restricts the flow whenever there is a surge of water from cornering, braking, kicking and so on.

Whatever your needs, one of these options is sure to be just right for keeping your pal hydrated on the road.

Pets of my own: Three pugs by the names of: Duke (Black), Chloe (Fawn), Jake (Fawn).

Something people may not know about you: In 2005 I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. I don't talk about it much with most people but when everything happened I was a bit overwhelmed with everything. Although a harsh experience, I have done better in the past with talking about it with others.

Favorite activity with the dogs: Pool time!!!

Favorite Dioji moment: When Buster first came up to me to let me pet him. It took him about a month until he then let me. He is still pretty shy towards me but I will never forget the first time!
